G & I went to see Watchmen last night with a friend. It was fun but I have mixed feelings about the entire evening.
The first part of this has to do with where we saw the film. We went to the Showcase Florence and sat in the Lux Level. That was very cool. Its all 21 or over with a bar and restaurant. You can sit in a really nice bar area prior to the film and order food. The coolest part is the assigned seating. On something that is going to sell out, it was nice to know that I had a good seat and we could all sit together. It ended up being about $5 more when its all said and done. You pay $20 for the seat ($10 for admission plus a service charge) and you get a $5 voucher for food. I have yet to go to a movie where I don’t spend at least $5 on concessions, so thats a wash. Having them bring things to you is kind of nice. The problem was you have people walking in front of you constantly, and it was a bit distracting. I see a real advantage in combining dinner and the movie, especially is someone is watching the kids.
The second, and more important part has to do with the film. It was incredibly faithful to the comic; really too faithful. There was no reason to really watch this if you have already read it and aren’t a huge fanboy. The characters were good. The actor playing Rorschach was truly awesome; he brought the character to life in a really creepy way, which is exactly what you want. Dan was good as well. Ozymandias was not quite what I expected but okay.
Probably my biggest problem was how they changed the ending. I don’t think this is a big surprise or a spoiler. In the comic it is a little far fetched but you can see the logic in it. They try to do something that is similar with the same logic, but it falls apart because of the execution. I don’t think it is nearly as plausible and I think the public would be more likely to figure out that they’ve been played. I can’t say more without spoiling it.
We will go back to the theatre, we are thinking this is a definite for Star Trek. Assigned seating on a big opening night would definitely be worth it.
The jury is still out on whether I’m going to buy the DVD or BluRay of this one.
